Character card - take 2 (and 3)

The great thing about sharing my nearly-ready "art" with you lot is that I get really useful and rapid feedback, both here and on the FB page I've set up for Knights' Quest, and so here are a couple of what I hope you will think are improvements. Firstly, I've taken DonsSword's advice and replaced the pentagon with a hexagon - good call! A definite improvement in old-school cool. Second, JB (he of the missing ass) suggested that more contrast was needed between the parchment and the border, so I've tried one with simply a wider border, and one with a black bleed fill to the edge of the card.

Which do you prefer?

Card A:

Card B:

Pop your preference in the comment section below, if you'd be so kind.

  1. For me, the top one is more evocative of parchment, which is what I think you're after. Maybe if you put a shadow behind it, to give it some dimension and lift it off the white background?

Either way, I love the clean card layout. With all the dice laid out on the right hand side, I'm reminded of having played the simple (and free) RPG "Dungeon Squad" with my boys. Very simple mechanics that work great for kids - instead of having attributes assigned by #, you get to use a particular type of die for tests (e.g. if you're good with a sword, you'd roll a d12 to hit, if you're not you'd roll a d4). Wondering if you've got something similar in the works!

    1. Thanks TB! You're the second person to suggest a drop shadow, so I'll try that next.

As for the dice, yes, they are the basis for the combat, health, fatigue and experience mechanic. Nice and simple! Have a read of this earlier post for how it works.

    1. I'm probably going to print off a few cards in each style and see what I think once they are "in hand". I'll make sure to report back!

  3. Card A seems somehow more suited to the imagery.

    1. Thank you - nice to see new names/faces commenting.

(btw, looking at your blog, I'm impressed that you manage to paint/sculpt at work; I barely manage to at home!)

    2. I do it at work because I can not at home! With two small children (4.5 and 1.5) I have very little time to myself other than 3-4 lunch hours at work. So 40 odd minutes of painting during one of those lunch hours is about the best I can manage currently...

    3. My two boys are four and a half, and a few weeks off seven. I feel your pain, personal time wise!

  4. I like the second one!
And just an idea... what about using a square for the movement box? But one that looks like a movement space from the tiles...

    1. I toyed with using a square, for exactly that reason, and may go back to it. It just looked a little out of keeping. Perhaps I'll try again with a different line-style.

  5. Hard to decide, maybe have a battle between them and the victor stays? =P

    1. Winner stays on? Or "two cards enter, one card leaves!" - perhaps Tina Turner would be referee?!

  6. I prefer A, but would be interested to see what a drop shadow looked like.
