The costs of gaming - January 2015

By "costs" I don't mean social ones - the looks of pitying incomprehension from your wife or girlfriend (the female gamers I know have gamer partners, not so for the majority of male gamers I know), or the moments of concern when you realise your search history for suitable parts for a conversion might take some explaining to your employers ("What do you mean, boss? Of course I have an innocent explanation for looking up child-corpse-mutant-animal-wound-bombs-nightmare-conjoined-sacrifice-dungeon.")

No, this is actual raw finance costs.

I thought for my own interest I'd keep a log of how much I spent on gaming this year. Paints, brushes, miniatures, rulebooks, random bits from DIY and toyshops - the whole lot. Oh, and I'll include p&p costs as well and do it month by month.

Gaming costs for January 2015

Yes, in January I spent absolutely nothing on gaming. Not a penny. But the downside is that I got no gaming done at all.

I wonder if I can keep my net spending on gaming under a hundred and fifty quid this year....

Are you more or less profligate than that?

  1. I've probably spent about £70 since the start of the year, which is much more than usual and can be explained by the excitement of getting back into fantasy gaming after a six month hiatus. I've traded a lot too, and now have enough miniatures to be going with for the time being. I would put my normal hobby expenditure at about £20-£40 per month.

    1. That sounds familiar - both the normal expenditure, plus the splurge at the start of a new project.

  2. Well done to you!Books are my continual drain on the warchest not to mention the temptations of ebay.

    1. No matter how much I spend on toys, books will always remain my number one discretionary spending. They are what money was invented for, right?

  3. with a running count of over 350 miniatures to paint I am going with a "no new mini's" resolution this year.
so far December total spend £6, January total spend £0. One week into Feb and so far so good!

    1. That was part of the spur to monitor costs. I have fair sized orc, brettonian and chaos forces in the lead, along with a couple of good sized dwarf units ready to be allies, some 40mm ancient Greeks, a heavy envelope of Rogue Trader chappies and probably more. All just in boxes and bags. Time to paint and use them!

  4. Due to the impending arrival of my own money squig I've made the resolution that the only expenditure I'll allow myself this year is paint and so far I've stuck to it.

To be fair I have more than enough in the pile to keep me amused for a few years so it's probably a good thing!

I do have Erny's Birthday coming up so I need to be buying him something but that's not for me so I think I can get away with that one.

  5. I've spent £145 this year on miniatures, but this sum matches the cash given to me for my birthday (apparently I'm hard to buy of so family and some friends give me cash to spend on gaming).

I now have a halt on pending, until I've got some painting done.

    1. In one month?! Bloody hell, mate, what goodies did you snag with that pile of gold?

    2. 20 winged devil babies to use for caryatids
6 classic trolls (5 of them are the really characterful preslotter ones)
      A plague elemental
      7 old skeleton models
      A plague cart
A pack of 28mm riot shields

      Not a bad haul. ;-)

    3. Nice! You planning some arbiters with those shields?

    4. James and I rolled up confrontation gangs. I got Nomads, two of which have shields. Actually did some work on them this week. Should have all four of the starting gang ready to paint by the end of half term hols.

  6. I really don't like to talk about how much I manage to end up spending on miniatures - although I'm currently sticking to not having spent anything at all through February. Postage on swaps is going to be my limit until May, by the looks of things.

    Apart from Salute.

I expect that will hurt the wallet.
