I've got a bad feeling about this...

The bad feeling? Not that there'll be another set of abominations like Episodes 1 to 3, because this looks absolutely, hysteria-inducingly, excellent. No, the "bad feeling" is like every penny in my wallet suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.

You see, as well as focussing my oldhammering on a few specific models (Got a C31 hill troll spare? Send it my way, there's a good fellow!) to round out warbands I've accrued the lead for already, I've been captured by the idea of the Star Wars: X-Wing game and will hopefully be getting it for my birthday in a few weeks time.

Tokens! Dice! Pre-painted ships! Star Wars!

Like a GW boxed set, however, there's only so much you can do with the included models (an x-wing and two ties) and I've been pricing up gaming mats, more fighters, the Falcon (of course - duh!), and possibly a larger ship or two. I blame two things for my fall into a new game, aside from that trailer above. First, my dad took me to see the whole trilogy as my first cinema trip, aged about five. Second, the amazing LucasArts fighter sims for the pc, X-Wing and Tie Fighter. What chance did I have in overcoming the Jedi mind tricks after that?

May the force be with you,
Rab

  1. Its a nice game to just pick up and play with no prep, my friend Peter (he was at my house when we played Necromunda) has quite a bit of x-wing so I'm certain I could persuade him to put on a game. After playing I got all excited too and went and bought a bunch of ships you cannot get from shape ways. Now you have to understand I love the prequels as much as the originals, watch the films through kids eyes and they are great.. So I have a bunch of Naboo fighters, jedi fighters and vulture droids.

    1. Shapeways, eh? How do you manage for ship cards and the like? Is there an online program to create them? Much as you'll never convince me on Eps 1-3, the jedi fighters are pretty cool-looking.

    2. Boardgamegeek has a ton of ship cards already made in the forums for X-wing, and most of the Shapeways creaters make the cards to match their ships (being no dummys).

There are also online card makers if you want to make a one off pilot card or similar.

    3. You're not making the likelihood of overpaying on my mortgage any greater, you know!

What happened to "friends don't let friends get addicted"?

  2. Arhhhh the Dark side is strong it is, buy new toys you must. Now this is where you also get some WEG or WotC figures and run a joint campaign of space and land battles :)

    1. Give in to your temptation. Take your wallet. Use it. With each passing moment you make yourself more the servant of a new game...

      Or something like that!

  4. Amongst my many tabs in my miniatures planning spreadsheet, I have one called "Xwing". On that tab is a list of financial ruin. You see, I love Star Wars, and the EU, and would very much like to create whole squadrons of fighters. And then there is the Shapeways side list... freighters and storm trooper transports and other things that you would need for proper campaigns.

    1. I think I might need to block the shapeways site!

    2. Some "Helpful" links:
Squadron builder (with rules and other people's squadrons)
      z-95 3 pack
Senate Starship to replace the counter
      Transport
TIE Scimitar (should replace that horrible wave 7 ship nicely)
      Eta-2
      Delta 7

Unfortunately the larger ships get pretty pricy, otherwise adding a Ghost or Gozanti would be an option... well, a more reasonable one.

  5. Well, after reading a few "how to get started in X Wing" sites, I've bought myself a boxed set as they all seem to say you really need two boxes. That way, if I do get a set for my birthday I'm sorted (for now), and if not I still can play... Weak and impetuous, I am!
