Look, Ma, it's my thumb!

A couple of quick interim snaps until I take a handful of decent pictures. These are the latest two additions to my unit of chaos warriors. Obviously at some point I'll paint a banner to hang from the pole. The tentacle arm is from a maxmini mutation sprue used to replace the arm that was missing before I got hold of him, and the banner pole was made from a variety of bits from old plastic beastman and chaos warrior sprues.

Oh yeah, and my thumb - it was time to unleash it's perfectly manicured glory upon the internet. You were finally ready.

    1. I know - you can see why I had to hold back from sharing it until now.

    2. But now the internet is now a richer place.

It's better then videos of cats yawning on youtube ;0)

    3. Yes, that thumb is very well manicured. With a white crescent base, evenly distributed nail overhang, very well balanced. Nice work.

      Oh, the minis? They rock!

    1. Me too! I'm up to six, with number seven well on the way. I'm going to take a brief pause (just a day or two) to get my Oldhammer Forum space pirate finished, but then I'm going all out to get the ten of them done!

  3. I can't believe the painting on that thumb! It looks so lifelike. My favourite part is the cuticle. Do you use oils?

I have a serious question for the boffins out there. Who sculpted the miniature in Rab's first picture. I know he's called "Mighty Zog Arkwright" from the CH2 range. I think (??) it was Bob Naismith, but I'm not sure. I'm curious because this fellow goes on to have an illustrious career as the alternate Warrior of Chaos for 2nd edition Talisman. And my own dark compulsions compulse me to track down all the trivia about Talisman miniatures...

In any case, I love your paintjob on Might Zog, Rab. The check pattern is grand. I recently painted this same miniature but I like your version much better since yours really pops.

    1. I can't help you with the sculptor, I'm afraid, but thank you for the kind words about Zog. I think it's the depth of red that does it - I used the Foundry British Redocat triad, with a couple of washes of the old GW Baal red wash. Then I did some overly sharp edge highlighting with Foundry Bright Red, panicked, and used some GW Scarlet ink to bring it all back together and ended up with that lovely glowing result. I'll be playing with more inks in future!

  4. I've already commented on the forum about your banner dude, but that was before you'd painted him up. I really like your colour choice with his helmet, really unique & cool!

This chaos warriors' always been a favorite of mine (Mine is patiently waiting with the rest of his brother's for me to get around to painting one day?), but there's one part that's a real let down on him, his weapon....sculpting wise it's really bland. I'm thinking of having a go at trying to replace it, but it's going to be a real bitch because it's an integral part of the mini.

I think you'll hardly notice it on yours when he's done, having a banner will be more than enough to draw attention away from it.

    Anyway, top work Rab :)

    1. Thanks :)

I agree about the weapon - it's like the sculptor made a blank, vaguely axe shape and then never had the time to go back and fix it. I decided that any attempt by me to hide it would make it worse, so I just painted it like the solid slab it is. I hope you're right about the banner; I'm a little daunted by the prospect...

The first one is my favourite.

    1. Thanks - I think the red one did turn out better, but I am pleased with the tentacle and helmet of the other.
