Time passes 01

Time passes 01
We've now reached the stage where all the players have dispersed to university etc. so our gaming is likely to be far more spread out, with maybe only a single game session per year. This is the first such gap, but on Friday we're getting the band back together (including a boyfriend and girlfriend who will be exposed to the full oddness of the Averaigne Adventurers en masse).

So what's been happening since the last session? Well...
Broadmead Ridge, home of the party, while they were having the roof repaired

The party have been joint castellans of Broadmead Ridge for over a year. It was about midsummer when Lord Montfort gifted it to them for their noble actions and it is just about the end of harvest in the following year. The two vilages of Holt and Frith that fall under their control are fairly poor but peacable enough farming communities. They are mixed livestock and arable farmers, with some trade down to Lord Montfort's estate (the local cheese is highly prized locally for it's creaminess). There are also travellers and traders that come down from the foothills of the Blackreach mountains (the now topped peaks of which are visible on a clear day on the horizon) who use the broad stone bridge across the river Holt as the best crossing point for miles in either direction.

It is the toll income from this bridge that is the only real wealth of this castellany, and that soon goes on repairs and upkeep; the party are certainly not accruing wealth from this land!

Nevertheless, it is a comfortable life for those whose background has been rough and ready, and such a person could be content there. A happy ending?

Emails are on the way to each player with character-specific details to get the game underway quickly on Friday. It will be the first time we've played with miniatures, so that'll be fun too.

  1. Although I haven't commented often I have been following your rpg posts. I began a campaign using B/X Essentials about two months back, with five PCs. We've managed five sessions so far and things seems to be going swimmingly. I have used Raging Swan's Duchy of Ashlar setting, but with tonnes of modifications. Have to say I much prefer it it to miniature gaming! On another notes, have you heard about Escape the Dark Castle? If not, check it out here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1998318065/escape-the-dark-castle-the-legend-grows

    1. I've not heard about that, but will check it out now.

I keep looking for the sweetspot that combines rpg "open world" with a terrain board, miniatures, and the role of a general of a squad/gang/warband. Not found it yet!

    2. No. Although there is overlap between wargaming and rpg, they are really two very different beasts! Your setting was entirely home brewed wasn't it? I would love to see a gazetteer! If you look at Grey hawk etc it doesn't have to be insanely detailed - just topography with some basic details. I'm sure you could stick it on rpgnow for a couple of quid. I'd buy a copy!

  2. Funny you should say that, because I have a gazetteer of sorts in progress. Thank you for the encouragement :)

    1. Oh cool! I would certainly be interesting in picking up a copy. On the topic of rpg settings, this may or may not be up thine alley: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lazylitch/woodfall-a-mini-hexcrawl-setting
